The Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia - August 18

Today we departed our Inverness Beach Cottage - a place we would have loved to spend a whole week.  We were excited to make our way toward The Cabot Trail - the famous drive along the cliffs of the Cape Breton Highlands.  Although we didn't know it when we left Inverness, it turned out to be one of our busiest (and best) days and included breathtaking views, long hikes, wildlife and treacherous drives.

It took awhile to drive to the trail and we were feeling a tad peckish.  We stopped at the Dancing Goat for a bite.  Great idea, Jean!

We picked up some bread and Fat Archies (molasses cookies) from the bakery and discovered that they also have improved upon the Bacon, Egg and Cheese Sandwich! The bacon, egg and cheese part was familiar, but it is served on one of their biscuits with a lemon juice and chive mayonaise.  Who knew?

Mmmmm

Back on the road, the trail hugged the coast for nearly an hour before climbing into the highlands.  Most of the trail is part of the Cape Breton National Park and we stopped at the park center to purchance a pass and learn a bit about the highlands.  Of course, Jean and the girls visited the gift shop and did their duty to support the local economy.

Back on the Cabot Trail after this costly stop, we continued to drive along the coast working our way higher into the highlands.  Here are a few more pictures.  Grace is going to pick up the story from here (just as it gets exciting!).
